Briar Cliff University (BCU) has rapidly emerged as a powerhouse in collegiate esports since launching its program in Sept. 2021. Fueled by a commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and excellence, the Chargers have been blazing trails, offering unique opportunities for players and setting a high standard for what a university esports program can achieve.

A Foundational Pillar in Midwest Esports

As a foundational member supporting multiple teams, BCU has consistently demonstrated its dedication to fostering a vibrant esports ecosystem. The program fields competitive teams in some of the most popular titles in gaming, including League of Legends, Valorant, and Overwatch 2. These teams participate in high-stakes competitions such as the Midwest Esports Conference (MEC), where players not only showcase their talent but also build connections that enhance their collegiate careers.

At the heart of this dynamic program is Jack Moehrke, the Head Coach and Director of Esports. Jack brings a vision for player development that extends beyond gaming. In 2023, he served on the Engagement Committee for the Midwest Esports Conference, further cementing BCU’s role as a leader in shaping the regional esports scene. His efforts have ensured that BCU is not only competing but actively contributing to the growth of esports as an industry.

As Jack pointed out, a program is full of incredible people that make their unique culture. “It’s not just a video game it’s a sport” a phrase coined by the Grad Assistant Eric Enlow, Briar Cliff continues to grow and add talent sharing the vision of the program. Eric was instramental in preparing for the Spring 2025 season. Aspen Rowitz, Overwatch Coach, has also shown to be another incredible addition. Another up an coming addition is Felipe Alves, a student coach that will add incredible value to the League of Legends program.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

In October 2022, BCU unveiled a cutting-edge Esports Arena, featuring 13 gaming stations, interactive retro games, and TVs dedicated to showcasing live matches. This arena provides a professional-grade environment for athletes to train, compete, and thrive. It is a space where strategy meets execution, and where student-athletes build camaraderie and sharpen their skills.

A Season of Achievements

Last season, the Briar Cliff teams demonstrated remarkable prowess:

  • Valorant: The Gold team made an impact in the Immortal 1 division, competing fiercely against top-tier teams like Radford University and Bryant & Stratton College.
  • Overwatch 2: Competing in the Grandmaster 3 division, the team secured a dominant 3-0 victory against Pennsylvania Western University before facing elimination in later stages of the championship bracket.

Though challenges emerged, these experiences laid a strong foundation for growth and provided invaluable lessons for the athletes.

Beyond the Game

BCU’s esports program goes beyond gameplay. It offers a comprehensive platform for student development, integrating esports with academic disciplines such as graphic design, digital communications, and computer science. Students interested in broadcasting or sports information also benefit from hands-on experiences, preparing them for careers in the broader esports industry.

Looking Forward

As the program continues to grow, BCU remains dedicated to fostering leadership, teamwork, and strategic thinking among its players. The Chargers have established themselves as not just competitors but community builders, contributing to the ever-evolving world of collegiate esports.

With visionary leadership, top-notch facilities, and an unwavering commitment to its athletes, Briar Cliff University is writing a new chapter in collegiate esports—one where players thrive both in the game and in life.
